Will older Office files work in newer versions of Office?

Older Office files like .doc, .xls and .ppt work in modern Office — no conversion needed. Here’s how compatibility works.

Updated this week

Yes — files created in older versions of Office will work without issues in all newer versions.

What file types are supported?

New Office versions fully support documents created in earlier formats, including:

  • .doc and .docx (Word)

  • .xls and .xlsx (Excel)

  • .ppt and .pptx (PowerPoint)

  • As well as all other standard Office file types — including formats from Outlook, Access, Publisher, and OneNote

Do I need to convert the files?

No. You can open and edit your existing files directly — no conversion is needed.

Can I still share these files?

Yes. You can share older Office files freely, and they will open without problems in any modern version of Office.
