How to Switch Out of S Mode in Windows 10 & 11

Learn how to switch out of S Mode in Windows 10 and 11 to install apps outside the Microsoft Store.

Windows 10 and 11 in S mode are designed for security and performance, allowing only apps from the Microsoft Store. If you need to install apps from outside the Microsoft Store, you must switch out of S mode. This process is free and permanent, meaning you cannot go back to S mode once you switch.

Steps to Switch Out of S Mode

  1. Open Settings on your PC.

  2. Go to System > Activation.

  3. Under Switch to Windows Home, find Switch out of S mode.

  4. Click Open Store.

  5. On the Switch out of S mode page in the Microsoft Store, click Get.

  6. After confirmation, you can install apps from outside the Microsoft Store.

Important Notes

  • This applies to Windows 10 and 11 Home editions.

  • Windows 10/11 Pro, Enterprise, and Education do not support S mode.

  • Once switched, you cannot revert to S mode.
